Saturday Evening Post cover art is a retrospective
of American life
The arrival of The Saturday Evening Post magazine each week during the first
half of the twentieth century provided a mirror for Americans to see themselves,
their neighbors, and their country. More than any other feature, the cover image
painted by the greatest illustrators of that Golden Age of Illustration told a story,
brought back memories, celebrated an event -- and usually made one smile. These
cover images helped readers identify with the shared values that had blended in
the national melting pot of diverse ideas that was the United States.
