The Fairest in the Land
John Alvin
Giclee on canvas

This 1937 Disney story is well known: the evil stepmother (pictured above), Happy, Dopey, Grumpy, Sleepy, Bashful, Doc, Sneezy, the apple, the Prince, the kiss. As the Seven Dwarfs dance with joy, Snow White and the Prince go off to live in his castle. The animators for Snow White's character, were tasked with the challenge of making Snow White more believably human and realistic than any of the Disney studio's previous animated characters.

The movie and art world lost one of its premiere artists when in 2007 John Alvin passed away at the age of only 59. Considered the pre-eminent movie campaign artist of the past half centurys, his career began in 1974 with his creation of the iconic movie poster for Mel Brook's "Blazing Saddles." In a career that encompassed multiple projects for such directors as Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Blake Edwards, Mel Brooks and Ridley Scott. Alvin was considered by many studios as the go-to artist for movie poster and campaign art.

John Alvin said that his work "created the promise of a great experience" and in that he never failed. Of his most memorable creations are the theatrical posters for Spielberg"s 1982 film "ET" with the alien's and Elliott's fingers lovingly reaching toward each other not to mention the Disney's "Lion King" poster design.
