Buddy Young: MIA
Willard Mullin
Original sports cartoon

Probably 1951. In this cartoon fans and coach wonders where Buddy Young has been after missing two games. Young gained recognition at the University of Illinois as both a track record holder and as a football running back. In his first Illini football game, he ran for a 64-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage; then on his second carry, he ran 30-yards for another touchdown. By season's end he had scored 10 touchdowns equaling Red Grange?s Big Ten Conference record. After interrupting college for military service, he returned to Illinois helping the team win the 1947 Rose Bowl.

Professionally, in 1950 Young joined the NFL's New York Yanks (as #76). A year later the Yanks folded and Young was assigned to the Dallas Texans. A year later the Texans folded and he was assigned to the Baltimore Colts. He gained 1,000+ yards five times in his pro career and in 1954 was selected to the NFL Pro Bowl team. Later he was the first Colt to have his jersey number retired. Young was one of the first black men to play pro football.

Original cartoon by Willard Mullin, NY World Telegram & Sun and later in The Sporting News. It is from this original drawing that the image was reproduced in the newspaper.

Original cartoon, ink and pencil on coquille board signed by artist.

Provenance: This original cartoon is from the personal collection of Hugo A. Autz, long-time editor of The Sporting News during the late 1950s and '60s who had access to the best sports cartoons during the Golden Age of Sports Cartooning.
