Kazmaier: Terrible Tiger
Willard Mullin
Original sports cartoon

1951. During the 1951 college grid season collegiate sports fans watched Princeton's tailback Dick Kazmaier show exactly why he was an All American, Maxwell Award and Heisman winner. He was the key to two straight undefeated Tiger seasons. In his final two college seasons, the Tigers went 18-0. His Princeton record still stands at 38.8 points per game.

Kazmaier was drafted by the NFL's Chicago Bears, but opted out of professional football for a Harvard Business School degree, followed by a stint in the Navy.

In the 1951 game previewed by this Willard Mullin cartoon, Kazmaier's final game at Princeton was a 13-0 home win over Dartmouth.

Dick Kazmaier, the last Ivy Leaguer to win the Heisman Trophy. He won the Heisman Trophy in a landslide, receiving 506 first-place votes and 1,777 points, which was a record at the time. His No. 42 was retired by the school in 2008.

The Ohio native passed on an NFL career after being drafted by the Chicago Bears in 1952, instead choosing to attend business school at Harvard.

He went on to found Kazmaier Associates, Inc., an investment and consulting firm that specializes sports marketing and products and is based in Concord, Mass. He died in August 2013.
