Wake Up, Ron
Gene Basset
Original political cartoon

"Wake Up, Ron. It's that dreadful Mr. Walsh with another 'what did the President know and when did he know it?"

1992. Iran-Contra ("Irangate") was President Ronald Reagan's Watergate. Senior Administration officials were found to be involved in secret sales of arms to Iran (then under an arms embargo). In 1986 Reagan had signed a "finding" authorizing CIA participation in these arms sales, a process which was to be kept secret from Congress. The goal: arms sales profits would secure the release of American hostages from Lebanon (they did) and fund up to $30 million to the Nicaraguan "Contras" who, at the time, were combating Communist inroads in Central America. (Congress had specifically banned such funding of the Contras in 1983.)

After being exposed, Reagan admitted that he knew about the Iranian "arms for hostages" dealings but not the Contras funding. Several Reagan Administration officials later were charged and convicted of felonies. But National Security Council aide Lt. Col. Oliver North took much of the heat for this discovery in congressional hearings and in 1988 legal proceedings. North was found guilty of three felonies which were later vacated by an appeals court because of immunity he was granted for his testimony. (probably published in mid-1992 as indictments and court proceedings against Irangate participants were unfolding)

Newspaper artist Gene Basset spent more than 40 years behind the drawing board, first as a sports and theatrical cartoonist and later as an award-winning political cartoonist.
After working in several cartooning capacities, in 1962 Basset, based in Washington, DC, became the chief editorial cartoonist for Scripps Howard newspapers with his work appearing in Scripps Howard papers across the country. A decade later, his cartoons were syndicated by the United Feature Syndicate. Basset joined the staff of the Atlanta Journal Constitution in 1982 where he retired a decade later.
