Battle of Hampton Roads
Betty Wells
Civil War Suite

Suite of 3 pieces

The historic March 1862 naval Civil War skirmish that took place at the mouth of the James River in Hampton Roads, Virginia, changed the course of naval warfare forever.

The Art-cade Gallery has proudly published a giclee fine art suite of three prints entitled "The Battle of Hampton Roads," depicting the famous Monitor-Merrimack (officially known as the Virginia) clash which was the first between two powered iron-covered warships – or "ironclads."

Drawn by NBC-TV News sketch artist Betty Wells and first used on the NBC Nightly News, her paintings view the action from the Union perspective. The centerpiece of the suite shows the naval battle while two sidepieces illustrate sailors' activities on other more traditional sailing wooden vessels.

Three pieces from a series painted by Betty Wells have been selected for suite. The largest, "The Battle of Hampton Roads," shows in seascape format the ferocity of the battle in progress. As a result this battle proved ironclads would forever be superior to wooden ships in withstanding enemy fire.

Two smaller side prints show Union sailors on traditional wooden vessels facing the challenges of sea "mines," a Confederate innovation during the Civil War. Many Union ships were damaged or sunk by these mines during the war. Some of the explosive mines were mobile, being attached to Confederate torpedo boats. The effect of mining was enough to disrupt or even force the cancellation of Union naval operations. Being attentive for the floating dangers was a large part of navigation through the infested waters.
Side pieces are entitled "Battle Cry" (right above) and "Sentry!" (left above)

The suite of three s/n giclee prints.
