Great Age of Sail
Peter Ellenshaw
Litho on paper

A beautiful image capturing on canvas of the old ships from the great age of sail.

"The design for this painting was inspired by Ozanne, one of the greatest marine artists of the 18th century," says artist Peter Ellenshaw. It is a painting of a splendid morning in a busy port as it might have appeared around 1760. On a day such as this, the water [was]calm and silvery, as the ships stood fully-rigged, ready to sail. Just beyond, the seas would beckon, promising adventure and romance. One by one, each ship in turn would answer her call... each [to] set sail for distant ports, leaving the peace and shelter of the harbor behind."

Peter Ellenshaw was a master designer of backgrounds for Walt Disney films including his Academy Award winning “Mary Poppins.” However, after Disney passed away in 1968, making movies wasn't the same anymore. Things were different, he wrote in his autobiography. I ceased to be as interested in film making.

In later life Ellenshaw became more absorbed with his second career – fine art, the painting of landscapes and seascapes for the sheer beauty of it.

Also available with frame, $755
