BETTY WELLS

Eyewitness with a sketch pad

For over two decades Betty Wells was America’s storyteller whose artwork brought the most important American trials, congressional proceedings, and other closed-to-cameras events into our living rooms via NBC television news shows.

As sketch artist for NBC News from 1974-1995, she covered the U.S. Supreme Court, historic courtroom trials, and Congressional events where cameras were not allowed. From her realistic drawings of the oral arguments and decision days at the nation’s Highest Court, to notable courtroom trials (Watergate, William Westmoreland, Oliver North, Amelda Marcos, John Hinckley, Susan Smith, and sniper John Muhammad) to the workings of Congress and its committees, Ms.Wells was an eye-witness capturing the proceedings for posterity with beautiful, life-like colored marker sketches which would be – when all is said and done – the only historic visual record of the event.

The portfolio of this two-time Emmy winner’s artwork is not only a documentation of a troubled era in American history drafted in the classic spirit of Honore Daumier, the famed nineteenth century French caricaturist Ms. Wells admires, but also stands by itself as fine art. The ability to capture the likenesses of her subjects in their surroundings makes Ms. Wells original artwork admired and sought after by art connoisseurs and collectors.
Now for the first time, selected Betty Wells court, Congressional, life sketches, and book illustrations are being reproduced as signed limited edition giclee prints. Many additional original sketches from her archives are available (subject to prior sale) from The Art-cade Gallery. And, yes, she has even done fantasy book illustrations!
