A Boy to Be
Dick Duerrstein
Giclee on canvas

Jiminy Cricket (everyone's favorite conscience) is featured standing solo in “Pinocchio,” a 1940 Disney animated musical fantasy film based on the Italian children's novel “The Adventures of Pinocchio” by Carlo Collodi. An old wood-carver named Geppetto carves a wooden puppet named Pinocchio who is brought to life by a blue fairy, who informs him that he can become a real boy if he proves himself to be "brave, truthful, and unselfish". His adventures involve encounters with a host of unsavory characters. Enter Jiminy, the conscience, for help.

It became the first animated feature to win an Academy Award – winning two for Best Original Score and for Best Original Song for "When You Wish Upon A Star" sung by Jiminy Cricket.

Dick Duerrstein is an icon in the animation industry and this portrayal of Pinocchio is memorable. As a child Duerrstein’s mother always included a ream of paper on her shopping list so that her son could continue to practice his art work. His passion for art, along with his love of Disney comics and movies fostered in him the dream of someday working for Disney Studios.

It was not long before he began his 22 year career as Creative Director for the Disney Consumer Products Division which creates merchandise for the national market. Duerrstein worked alongside many of the foremost animation artists of the 20th century, including Ward Kinball, Marc Davis (and incidentally, with Chuck Jones at Warner Bros.).

He always approaches the characters he draws with a child’s awe, but with an adult’s skill and memory. This gives his characters a sense of innocence while still retaining their timeless charm.
