What Makes Sammy Run?

Aired in two parts on September 27 and October 4, 1959 on NBC.

Ten years after an earlier live TV broadcast of this play, NBC presented this new dramatization of What Makes Sammy Run? in two one-hour segments and in color as part of its weekly Sunday Showcase. Originally a 1941 novel, it is a rags to riches story chronicling the rise and fall of Sammy Glick (played by Larry Blyden), a Jewish boy born in New York's Lower East Side who has made up his mind to escape the ghetto and climb the ladder of success by deception and betrayal. It also became a long-running Broadway musical.

TV IN SIGHT was a weekly series of cartoon features highlighting different television shows in this Golden Age of Television. Drawn by artist MURRAY OLDERMAN they were distributed by the Newspaper Enterprise Association during the 1959-60 television season. This artwork was distributed to local newspapers across the country and used on their television pages. Drawn on coquille board using pen, brush, and Prismacolor black pencil.

This is the original pen and ink drawing by Murray Olderman from which a reproduction was made for newspapers nationwide by the NEA (Newspaper Enterprise Association) syndicate in the fall of 1960. Signed by the artist.
