The Nixon Tapes
Gene Basset
Original political cartoon

1974. A dream of President Richard Nixon while he tried to save his presidency from the Watergate Scandal was to be able to redact his secretly recorded Oval Office tapes before they were made public. Here Scripps Howard cartoonist Gene Basset shows how Nixon might be envisioning the situation with an obvious reference to the infamous 18.5 minute gap on one reel of the tapes because of an alleged over-recording accident by President Nixon's secretary Rose Mary Woods. (published in July 1974)

Newspaper artist Gene Basset spent more than 40 years behind the drawing board, first as a sports and theatrical cartoonist and later as an award-winning political cartoonist.
After working in several cartooning capacities, in 1962 Basset, based in Washington, DC, became the chief editorial cartoonist for Scripps Howard newspapers with his work appearing in Scripps Howard papers across the country. A decade later, his cartoons were syndicated by the United Feature Syndicate. Basset joined the staff of the Atlanta Journal Constitution in 1982 where he retired a decade later.
