"The Wedding" is an autobiographical original NANCY THOMAS folkart acrylic painting on board. This painting tells a story which is very personal to the Yorktown, Virginia artist. The folkart work was done in 1982. Other Nancy Thomas originals are in our inventory.

On the reverse, the artist relates this story in her own hand:

"Gilbert Smith, a young Baptist minister, and Tomasia (Macy) Louisa Hazelgrove, daughter of a landowner, met and fell in love in 1898. In 1899 they were wed. They had two daughters; and eventually, two grandsons and one granddaughter. The one granddaughter became an artist in Yorktown, Virginia."

This is a rare opportunity to own an original painting done in the 1980s in which the artist comments about family life and society, originally purchased from Thomas by a local collector.

Nancy Thomas is a world-famous artist from Yorktown, VA. Her paintings and sculptures are crafted from wood or metal and then hand painted. Her work has been featured in national magazines including “House Beautiful” and “Country Home.”

Her art appears in the homes of thousands of collectors as well as in decorator books, in museums, in Hollywood films, on Broadway and on television. Thomas has been commissioned for numerous special works by a variety of institutions such as Colonial Williamsburg, the Museum of American Folk Art and the White House for a Christmas ornament.
