Smokey Bear
Rudolph Wendelin
Original presentation art

On May 4, 1944 a young bear cub was rescued from a forest fire in Capitan, NM. With the assistance of artist Rudolph Wendelin Smokey became the memorable symbol for preventing future forest fires. Following Smokey’s death in November 1976, his body was returned to Capitan and buried at what is now Smokey Bear Historical Park. Every May 4th the town hosts a celebratory party for their hometown hero!

Here's an original drawing of America's favorite fire-fighting messenger, Smokey Bear, by his creator Rudolph Wendelin. It is signed by Wendling. Makes a great accent piece in a den, family room, or among a collection of outdoor artwork. In 2014 the style of Smokey was modernized and turned into a more human-like character.
