Reg'lar Fellers created in 1917 by New York Telegram sports cartoonist Gene Byrnes was a long-run newspaper comic strip offering a humorous look at a gang of suburban children (who nevertheless spoke like New York street kids).

Syndicated from 1917 to 1949 as both a daily and Sunday strip which during many of its prime years (like this 1933 strip) tried to get Americans to at least chuckle during the Great Depression. Byrnes gradually withdrew from direct involvement with the strip, employing a succession of assistants/ghosts. The most notable (and probably longest lasting) was George Carlson. Unlike most cartoonists of his time, Byrnes owned his creation, and thus was free to use it elsewhere and soon was earning $25,000 a year.

Byrnes also is important to the comic world because of the number of professional textbooks he wrote explaining the art of cartooning,
