Settlement Rises on James
Stanley Meltzoff
Original oil
The Art-cade Gallery offers the original canvas painting of “A Settlement Rises on the James” by Stanley Meltzoff which originally appeared in an Exxon / Humble Oil calendar in May 1965. It was part of a “great moments in American history” theme used in the company’s calendar that year.
The Art-cade also is offering the original oil study of Meltzoff’s “Settlement.”
Stanley Meltzoff (1917-2006) began his career as art editor of “Stars and Stripes” in Africa and Italy during World War II and later was known for his covers for Scientific American, Sports Illustrated, and National Geographic. His work also appeared on covers of The Saturday Evening Post, Life, Argosy, and Field and Stream. Later in life he became renowned for his paintings of ocean life. Being a meticulous craftsman, he labored to make his paintings historically accurate. Meltzoff was elected to the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame in 1999.
