Great Wave of Kanagawa
Hokusai
Giclee on canvas

Behind the Great Wave at Kanagawa (1831), is from the great Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai's classic series of woodcuts, "36 Views of Mount Fuji." Although the image is often used in tsunami literature, many believe that Hokusai did not intend the image to be interpreted in that way. The waves are more accurately called "okinami" translated as "wave of the open sea."

This world-famous print is perhaps the most iconic image from Japan. The print features a wave that dominates the scene as it crashes onto people struggling to stay on their boat. As in all the prints in the "?36 Views" series, it depicts the area around Mount Fuji and the mountain itself appears in the background.

"The Great Wave" has served as an inspiration to Western artists including Vincent van Gogh.

This open edition reproduction giclee on canvas is handsomely framed in a heavy, bold black frame ready to hang. Extra shipping added.
