Political Dr.Seuss, The
Ron Lamothe
DVD presentation

Independent film maker Ron Lamothe created an insightful survey of the subtle way Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss) wove political statements into his popular children's books. By tracing the roots of Seuss from his childhood days in Springfield, Massachusetts to his final days in LaJoila, California, Lamothe portrays why readers were seldom aware of the political content of the fanciful tales they were reading.

This film highlights Seuss' background as an editorial cartoonist, advertising artist, and propaganda World War II film creator with the legendary Frank Capra.

How many of his readers know that "Yertle the Turtle" was modeled on Hitler? Or that "Horton Hears a Who" was a parable about the American postwar occupation of Japan? In fact, his personal favorite from among his many titles was "The Lorax," which tried to make a case for environmental awareness, long before it became a popular cause.

The Political Dr. Seuss film includes previously unseen material such as illustration drafts, family photographs and rare television appearances.

The Political Dr. Seuss originally aired October 26, 2004 on the PBS series Independent Lens. Running time 84 minutes.
