Bronzes are the most familiar type of three dimensional art. Skillful sculptors mould their clay “marquettes” which later will be cast from melted bronze and carefully finished with a patina accent. Bronzes are available in numerous shapes, sizes, and subject matter. A bronze is storytelling art at its zenith. (Gather a group of people around a bronze and listen as the stories interpreting the piece grow and develop.) There are special bronzes available that offer a unique view of a vocation, created especially for the offices of professionals.
Wood carvings also are beautiful decorative art objects. Rather than the solidness of a bronze, the carver can allow the natural beauty of the wood to accent the final design. Yet other carvers use paint to colorfully emphasize the hand-made shapes they have fashioned to tell a delightful story in wood relief. No matter the exact technique used, wood carvings stand alone as delightful accent pieces for any family living area.
Porcelain figurines, usually much smaller in size and more delicate than bronzes and wood carvings, offer an opportunity for a decorative accent that can be a focal point of a room décor. Whether displaying several works by an artist or combining the works of several craftsmen around a theme, a center of attention can be set for an exciting exhibition. Many of the porcelains offered by The Art-cade are derived from offset prints that offer the opportunity to create a unique multi-dimensional display of a framed limited edition print and accompanying three dimensional figure.
Soft sculptures are fashioned from a hefty dose of imagination by artists armed with sewing needles, thread, knives, and glue who sculpt lifeless cloth, buttons, piping, wood, antique toys, and practically anything (but the kitchen sink) into imaginary characters that oversee the world of their new environment. Whether it be the traditional Father Christmas, rabbits, court jesters, or our exclusive “Colonial Elf,” soft sculptures add an excitement to a décor and provide the basis for a unique life-long collection.
